Supporting Families Strengthening Recovery

We provide relief for those in recovery and for the families and friends who are supporting them within South Asian communities.

Empower

We believe knowledge is power. By sharing resources, running hard-hitting awareness campaigns, and connecting families with the right services, we help them take meaningful steps toward healing. Our work is rooted in the belief that collective care—when carers are supported, informed, and equipped—creates the best chance for long-term recovery.

Break the stigma in South Asian Communities.

Addiction is not a moral failure;
it's a disease.

Our Mission

Salik Project UK exists to support individuals in recovery from addiction — and equally, the families and friends who walk that path alongside them. We believe that recovery is not a solo journey; it requires community, compassion, and practical support. Our focus is to raise awareness of addiction in South Asian communities in the UK through education and signposting to existing services that offer recovery support.

In addition to this, we recognises that financial stress is a common trigger for relapse. For those rebuilding their lives — and for the people supporting them — the burden of unpaid bills, missing essentials, or struggling to meet everyday needs can be overwhelming and discouraging. To help relieve these pressures, Salik Project UK provides small, targeted grants to individuals and families in need leaving more time to focus on recovery. We believe that true recovery needs the support not only of family members and friends but entire communities working together to support someone struggling with their addiction as well as the families who walk the often lonely path with them.

To Serve Not Judge - What We Do:

Support

We provide emotional encouragement and practical assistance to families affected by addiction, especially carers who are often overlooked. This includes small grants to ease financial pressure, resources for navigating care systems, and a listening ear from people who understand. While we do not provide counselling, we are here to walk alongside you, offering solidarity and support through life’s toughest moments.

Educate

We work with local organisations, service providers, and community leaders to raise awareness of the cultural stigma and barriers surrounding addiction in South Asian communities. Our presentations and training sessions help professionals improve outreach and engagement with families that might otherwise remain invisible.

Refer

We signpost individuals and carers to appropriate, trusted services for addiction recovery, mental health, financial advice, and more. We help families understand what help is available and how to access it—ensuring no one is left alone to navigate complex systems or wait endlessly without guidance.

Voice

We advocate for the needs of underserved communities, especially when stigma or language barriers prevent people from speaking up. Whether it’s sharing stories, attending community meetings, or contributing to policy discussions, we aim to amplify the voices of those affected by addiction and the people who care for them.

Supporting Those Who Support Those in Recovery

Caring with someone for addiction needs strong family and community support network.

The Salik Project UK was established in loving memory of Abdul Hameed Salik, a devoted local community leader known for his passion for helping those in need. The project also honours the memory of loved ones, who courageously struggled with addiction.

Through their personal journey of supporting a loved one battling addiction while managing their own responsibilities, the Salik family came to understand that recovery requires more than professional care—it needs the dedicated support of families and communities.

In the South Asian communities in UK, addiction issues are on the rise but speaking about things like drug, alcohol and gambling addiction is still a cultural taboo. We aim to change this through education, training and awareness campaigns designed to remove the cultural stigma and build community resilience.

The Salik Project also recognised a significant and often overlooked challenge: the constant financial strain and emotional stress that builds up while caring for someone in recovery. This pressure affects not only the individual in recovery and their children but also the extended family members who provide ongoing care and support. These carers often receive little recognition or appreciation, despite putting their own lives on hold to help their loved ones through recovery.

Motivated by these realities, the family founded The Salik Foundation to provide targeted financial grants aimed at easing the hardships faced not only by those in recovery but also by the loved ones who stand steadfastly beside them.
